SWOON SWOON

So, a great friend of mine, Kelli, got married in April. Obviously I wanted to make her a quilt. I had big plans for this quilt. But in true Kim fashion, shit did not get done in time. The fact of the matter is, it is done now and it is loved.

A few notes:
1. Flea Market Fancy had to be used on this quilt. I hoarded it for Kelli, exactly for this project.
2. I am currently living with Marla because all my stuff is in LA in my new apartment while I am still finishing my stupid degree. So all the FMF had to be used because it has nowhere to go. All scrappy bits stay with Marla.
3. Marla has two big fluffy dogs, Cypress and Leuko.
4. Marla and I are known to be pretty loopy and ridiculous when together, especially with fabric all around us. See here:
Kim + quilt = burrito
Ok, now to this quilting business. I decided a while ago at the stash bash how I would attempt the wedding quilt. The lovely Kelly of Kelby Sews helped me choose some coordinating fabrics for the front, and Elizabeth from Don't Call Me Betsy helped me learn some quick HST math. Didn't get much done at the stash bash because I was busy with Mr Poll E Roid. Anyhow, I went with a swoon variation. You know, THE swoon? Some horrible math and weird shading/coding scribbles later I had a top pattern and a vision. This was it pre-chain peicing:

sorry the sun was being a little shit
Essentially it was a bunch of HSTs and some other 8.5 inch squares mashed together to try and be a Swoon. I pondered backing - what to do, what to do - then it came to me - USE ALL THE FMF. So we got this giant patchworky thing going on, kind of Christmasy I know...

future backing
Now this is where it starts to go downhill. I probably internet too much. I am a huge fan of Imgur. I love all the memes. Cue the awesomeness that led to memes which make me pee my pants. If you haven't met Moon Moon - do yourself a favor and read THIS. Now think about Marla's fluffy dog Leuko.

I give you Moon Moon. He loves Swoon Swoon. And hence the quilt got it's name. I am sure Kelli doesn't love the fact I am essentially calling her gift "stupid quilt" but I think it's fucking hilarious.

Moon Moon + Swoon Swoon = burritoon
Moon Moon and Cloud Chaser want mom off Swoon Swoon
Needless to say - making this quilt was a blast. And Marla and I talked with doubles all day. "Are you done done with quilt quilt?" "You want lunch lunch?" "Moon Moon want cube cube?" Horrible I know. Reminded me of the Office episode where Kevin thinks he will save time by shortening his sentences to caveman-like phrases. "Me want donut."

All in all we made it through the quilting experience without going too cray cray, and made a nice quilt. I think. But I am biased. Just don't look too closely...

The important thing is that Kelli loves it! And she is putting it to good use already:

Snuggled success!
So some quick quilt quotients (you dig that, I know):
Name: Swoon Swoon
Size: 64X64 - a good couch size snuggle quilt
Fabs: mostly Flea Market Fancy, with some other things, but really no clue what the white I used was...
Quilting: some really free motion FMQ by yours truly on Marla's machine
Binding: wrapped around from the back! And machine pieced! It was so quick and amazing I am doing it all the time. ALL OF THE TIMES. I know a little piece of Katie just died inside...

Alright kids - back to the pipetting! Catch you in another month or two! Thanks for your patience with this whole trying to graduate (aka not crafting) thing.

And because I am pipetting late into the evening, I leave you this gem.
ciao ciao peep peeps!

Mr. Poll E. Roid - an I-spy quilt

A long time no write - and no sew. But I did manage to finish that I-spy polaroid quilt for my friend's baby. With a lot of help from Marla. She helped get it done in time to get to CA. Here are some photos of the little guy:

Introducing Mr. Poll E. Roid
His debut - Mr. Poll E. Roid - not to be confused with a hemorrhoid.

Scrap Attack coming at ya!

Sew Mama Sew is having another one of their famous giveaway days. As Marla helped me clean fabric house for packing/moving last week I have some fabs to give away. I regret to say I can't afford shipping internationally so this giveaway is only open to US fabric hoarders. If you want to enter more of the giveaways go here!

Ok so this is actually three giveaways on one post. You can win all three if you want - or just one.

THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO WIN:

1. Tell me your beverage of choice for consumption on cinco de mayo.
2. Let me know if you want option 1, 2, or 3 or any combination there of. If you don't, I won't know what to enter you for, and no scraps for you, and that would be sad.
3. If you are a no reply blogger please leave your email in the comments using a spam-free format (email @ etc . com).

Here they are:

OPTION 1:  a gallon freezer bag filled with scraps that are between charm square or a fat quarter in size. Most are bright punchy fabrics but there really is a giant assortment. Marla of Sew Hungry can attest to the quality of fabs (also click here to enter her giveaway). Sorry the picture is crappy.

OPTION 2: a small sandwich sized scrap bag of holiday fabrics - fun for making ornaments or other small holiday trinkets.

OPTION 3: a gallon bag half full with small scraps - i.e. 1-4 inches wide and various lengths. I don't do a lot of scrappy sewing but I know someone would use these - especially if you are in to tiny paper piecing.

I know the pictures aren't the best but if you are into scraps I know you will appreciate them!

Go enjoy the giveaway day bliss. I will close the giveaway as per Sew Mama Sew rules on May 10th at 5pm PST.

ciao
k

Packing it up...

Sorry friends again for the silence these past months. I have been really busy with life and sewing and blogging had to stop for a while. It is with regret that I say to you I am packing away the sewing machine and the fabrics in process for the move, and so not to tempt me away from writing my dissertation. Catch me back online again in July after I supposedly move and find a job. Cheers to all you crafty people and may your crafting be bountiful!

Here is a look at a few last hurrahs I had:
Polaroid quilt top for a new baby
The Stash Bash 2013. We came, we sewed, we bashed.
A half apron I made for a friend for a shower gift.
I will try for a final post for the upcoming Sew Mama Sew giveaway day. In the mean time:

ciao bellas!
