So I actually wondered about this before. And then I met a friend who lives on Rhodes island in Greece. Apparently the theory is that one of the earlier settlers thought one of the islands off Rhode Island looked like Rhodes and named it Rhode Island. Later, it got incorporated with the mainland stuff and they kept the RI name. Wikipedia says there's another theory, but whatever. I'm going with the greek connection because of my friend. :D
