Weekend Delight!

So this weekend I was lucky enough to head down to Sandestin FL, aka some wonderful beaches on the gulf coast of FL in the pan handle region. I went down there for our annual department retreat - so lots of talks and sciencey stuff. In order to keep my hands occupied and my brain in the conference room (rather than wandering the beach) I brought my English Paper piecing (EPP) supplies in order to jump right in to my first attempt at it. I basted all of my pieces first then started assembling using the whip stitch.

I used my awesome pouch that Bonnie made me for our HP swap to transport my shiz around. It is nice and quiet and light - all the opposite of a sewing machine...

My little table area.
Stacks of 24 triangles, 7 hexagons, and 30 squares. I printed the templates that Katy Jones of Monkey Do/ I'm a ginger monkey (from here) has so graciously provided. It was just on regular printer paper so a little flimsy but I think I managed. No glue either just some pins and thread and a needle and my thumbs.

The whip stitching is where I need to practice. I am using a dark blue thread so it will blend better than white. But you can still see all the tiny errors. Oh well I think the overall appeal and look of the final pillow will make the little errors disappear.

So here is my very first EPP project in its early beginnings. Keep checking back for updates. This project is for a pillow for my best friend and the Traveling Pic Stitch blog hop - kill two birds with one stone. Have you ever done any EPP? What are your thoughts?

I think he looks pretty fun.
What do you think?
And you know having a retreat at the beach isn't too shabby - toes in the sand!

FEET!
Happy because of sunshine, ocean and sand :-)
Hope you all had a fantastic weekend as well! I am linking up to Beth's over at Plum and June for the Let's get acquainted Monday blog hop. Go check it out if you have some time. There are some great bloggers there every Monday sharing awesome projects.

cheers!

  1. I came over to check it out, just because I can, and then was at P&J's and saw assorted homemade cookies and had to click - little did I know it was you!! So I am visiting today, from my blogger reading list and from the link up.

Back to the sewing though - I'm impressed that you're sewing at the beach. I guess I'm not that dedicated. i am staring at your EPP and can't see any awful stitching (or are you like me and only take photos of the good sides :-)?). Enjoy your holiday, and your lovely pillow.

  2. Your EPP block looks fantastic from here and I don't see any flaws either. Look forward to seeing the finished pillow!

  3. I think your EPP looks pretty fantastic too Kim. Haven't tried any yet as I'm not a big fan of hand sewing? Did you enjoy it? That beach looks pretty awesome by the way. I'd be very happy to be on retreat there!
